Accra: The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with Fidelity Bank Ghana, has launched a climate action awareness campaign in the Ho Municipality. This initiative aims to address the negative impacts of climate change and poor sanitation in the region.
According to Ghana News Agency, community meetings were held in Ho-Dome and Ziave Dzogbe, where Rev. Vincent Adzika, the Ho Municipal NCCE Director, highlighted the rapid rise of plastic pollution as a major environmental threat. He explained that plastic waste significantly contributes to climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions during both its production and disposal processes.
Rev. Adzika emphasized that inadequate plastic waste management and poor sanitation practices have exacerbated urban pollution, leading to outbreaks of diseases like typhoid fever, malaria, and cholera. He called for a change in behavior among citizens, underscoring the importance of civic responsibility in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to climate action, life below water, and life on land.
Furthermore, Togbui Dede III, the Chief of Ho-Dome, advised his community members to be mindful of the health hazards associated with poor sanitation, particularly the severe effects of typhoid on the human body. In Ziave Dzogbe, Togbui Afari IV urged the Ho Municipal Assembly to improve sanitation conditions at the Central Market and address the issue of mentally ill individuals in the area, which affects both hygiene and safety.
The Climate Action Awareness Campaign, funded by Fidelity Bank, is being executed in selected districts across five regions. The campaign includes various activities such as civic festivals, inter-school competitions, clean-up exercises, radio discussions, and interactions with community groups.
