National Parents and Caregivers Association for Persons with Disabilities Formed in Ghana

Accra: A National Parents and Caregivers Association of Persons with Disabilities in Ghana has been formed under the guidance of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD). The association aims to serve as a voice and advocate for issues impacting parents and caregivers of persons with disabilities in the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, the association comprises parents and caregivers of children with disabilities, along with representatives from organizations working with persons with disabilities. It will advocate for the inclusion of policies supporting parents and caregivers of persons with disabilities, especially focusing on children.

Ms. Rita Kusi Kyeremaa, Executive Director of the GFD, emphasized that the formation of the association represents a mutually beneficial development for all involved. She assured, "We will do whatever it takes to support you for your voices to be heard."

Mr. Joseph Atsu Homadzi, President of the GFD, also expressed his unwavering support for the new parents' association. A five-member interim executive committee was elected to oversee the legalization process of the association.

The interim committee is chaired by Mrs. Hannah Awadzi, Executive Director of the Special Mothers Project. Other elected members include Ms. Gifty Ayoka of the Talking Tipps Foundation as Vice Chairman, Ms. Rosemary Akya Poku of Down Syndrome Ghana as Secretary, Mrs. Justina Yiadom-Boakye as Treasurer, and Mrs. Ellen Affam-Dadzie as an Executive Member.
