Sunyani: Mrs. Fati Kine-Lam, the Bono Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has urged individuals, households, and communities to plant more trees to prevent disasters. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, she emphasized the role of trees as protectors of humanity, highlighting their importance in enhancing ecosystems and preventing flooding.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Kine-Lam stated that trees significantly contribute to disaster prevention by reducing erosion and mitigating climate change impacts such as extreme weather patterns and events. She pointed out that trees protect buildings from windstorms and rainfall-related disasters, stabilize the soil, and control erosion. In landslide-prone areas, trees help stabilize slopes and prevent soil displacement.
Mrs. Kine-Lam further noted that trees provide shade, absorb and retain water, act as windbreaks, and purify the air. She emphasized that tree planting is a responsibility for environmental sustainability. Additionally, in another interview, Mr. Kofi Adu Gyamfi, the Sunyani Forest District Manager, encouraged public participation in the nationwide tree planting exercise. He mentioned that the Sunyani District Forest aimed to plant 310,000 trees between June and September this year and called for public support to curb illegal logging and lumbering.
