MWAG Hosts Second Triennial Conference Focusing on Women’s Health

Accra: The Medical Women Association of Ghana (MWAG) has successfully conducted its Second Triennial Conference, bringing together members and aspiring young lady doctors. Dr. Mary Amoakoh-Coleman, the President of MWAG, highlighted the association's core mission of supporting the welfare of its members and the public.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Amoakoh-Coleman emphasized the association's strategic public engagements, particularly with women and girls, to enhance their well-being. MWAG has initiated various programs, including cervical cancer awareness and screening, annual menstrual hygiene day with education and distribution of free sanitary towels, medical outreaches, and breast cancer education and screening across different communities.

She acknowledged the contributions of MWAG members who work across the country, often in challenging conditions, to provide leadership and ensure quality healthcare alongside their male counterparts. The conference's theme focused on women's health as a national asset and explored ways lady doctors could advance this agenda for personal and national benefit.

Dr. Amoakoh-Coleman pointed out that approximately 68% of Ghanaian women are employed in the informal sector, underscoring the importance of good health to fulfill their economic roles. She highlighted preventable health conditions faced by Ghanaian women, stressing the need for preventive measures like healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and health screenings.

The President also mentioned the unique health challenges faced by lady doctors, emphasizing the conference's role in motivating members to address these issues proactively. She encouraged members to collaborate to realize the association's potential.

Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboakye, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service, praised MWAG for its significant contributions to public health initiatives, which have reduced mortality rates and improved health outcomes. He highlighted their work in medical research and urged MWAG to extend their advocacy to underserved areas.

Dr. Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle Constituency, also commended MWAG's healthcare efforts and encouraged them to continue enhancing healthcare services nationwide.
