Morocco Reinforces Africa as Core of Its Foreign Policy, Says Foreign Minister

Rabat: Morocco has made the African continent the cornerstone of its foreign policy, the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, announced at the 2nd Forum of Chairpersons of Foreign Affairs Committees of African Parliaments. The event, themed 'Towards Establishing Lasting Foundations for Stability and Security in Africa,' took place in Rabat, where Bourita emphasized Morocco's commitment to a comprehensive vision focused on promoting peace, security, and development in Africa.

According to Ghana News Agency, Bourita highlighted Morocco's approach under the leadership of His Majesty the King, which integrates security, peace, and development. He stated that a purely security-driven approach is insufficient to address Africa's complex challenges, advocating for a broader vision that incorporates social and economic dimensions for lasting peace and prosperity. He further noted that Morocco's 'African optimism' stems from its belief in the continent's potential and commitment to sustainable solutions.

Bourita cited several initiatives launched by Morocco to support African countries, including the cancellation of debts for the least developed African nations and the elimination of customs duties on their products. He mentioned the African Action Summit in 2016 and the 'AAA' Initiative for food security as key efforts. Additionally, projects like the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline and the Atlantic Initiative for Sahel countries were highlighted as part of Morocco's strategy to address energy and development challenges.

The Minister emphasized the importance of human-centered policies, with Royal visits fostering closer ties with African populations and leaders. Morocco's cooperation focuses on tangible projects in education, health, and housing, reflecting its strong sense of belonging to the continent. Bourita asserted that Africa is not merely a neighboring region but a land of identity and historical belonging for Morocco, with the country's stability and development closely linked to that of the continent.

The Forum served as a platform to underscore the need for collaborative efforts among African nations to build a prosperous future. Bourita stressed the evolving role of parliaments in international affairs, advocating for legislative bodies to contribute ideas and initiatives to meet contemporary challenges. The 2025 edition of the Forum aims to institutionalize this event, reinforcing Africa's strategic choices and objectives.
