Accra: The Minority in Parliament has called for a full-scale investigation and prosecution of individuals identified to have perpetrated violence at the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run on Friday, July 11, 2025. The Minority has also demanded an unambiguous apology to Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mr. Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, Deputy National Organiser of the NPP, and Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma North constituency.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, described the violent disruption of the election as the most serious assault on Ghana's democracy since the return to constitutional rule. The Minority Caucus expressed shock that government officials failed to condemn the violence but rather openly celebrated it, describing it as a 'breach of public trust.'
The coordinated attacks on political figures, party agents, and journalists followed by the celebration of this violence by senior government officials marks a turning point that demands immediate action. 'Ghana's democracy must not be turned into a battlefield,' Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated. He criticised the Ghana Police Service for negligence, accusing them of standing aloof as alleged NDC thugs on motorbikes perpetrated violence on the people.
The Minority Leader noted that such 'military-style' brutalities on innocent Ghanaians could lead to the systematic destruction of the country's democratic norms and called on the government to take immediate action. Members of Parliament from both sides of the House, while commenting on the statement, condemned the violence and called for an end to political violence in the country.
