Keta: The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in Keta Municipality of the Volta Region has educated the public on the causes and effects of flood disasters. The NADMO emphasized the importance of awareness and preparedness ahead of the rainy season to mitigate the impact of floods and prevent unforeseen disasters.According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Godknows Blebu, the NADMO Director at Keta, cautioned the public against building structures on waterways, which could worsen flooding in the area. He explained that waterways are natural paths for water flow, and constructing buildings on them can obstruct water flow, leading to flooding. Mr. Blebu highlighted heavy rainfall, poor drainage, and human activities such as building on waterways and clogged gutters as common causes of floods during previous rainy seasons. Understanding these causes is crucial for preventing and mitigating flood impacts.He further explained the devastating effects of floods, including loss of life, property destruction , and displacement of people. Floods can also lead to waterborne diseases, damage infrastructure, and disrupt economic activities. Mr. Blebu urged implementation of proactive measures to prevent flooding and emphasized the importance of public awareness and education on preventive methods.Mr. Blebu pointed out NADMO's critical role in disaster management in Ghana, including flood disasters. The organization educates the public, provides emergency response, and supports affected communities during disasters. NADMO in Keta has engaged communities, especially flood-prone areas like Abutiakope, Lawoshime, Hagodzi, Mamime, and Songbe, on prevention and mitigation strategies. He encouraged public participation in these efforts and stressed the importance of taking responsibility for safety during the rainy season.He noted that prevention and preparedness are key to mitigating flood impact and urged the public to take immediate actions to protect themselves and their properties. NADMO is working with stakeholder s such as assembly members, community leaders, groups, and other organizations to address flooding issues in Keta and beyond. Mr. Blebu recommended collaborative efforts like communal labor in communities.Residents in Keta expressed fear about flood disasters, attributing them to poor drainage systems, sand winning, and building on waterways. They called for urgent attention to reduce flooding risks and appealed to the Municipal Assembly to check building sites before issuing permits to prevent construction on waterways.The Ghana News Agency gathered that in previous years, areas such as schools, churches, mosques, markets, and houses were submerged during floods, demanding urgent attention to prevent future occurrences in subsequent rainy seasons.
