Keta: The Keta Municipal Health Directorate in the Volta Region has initiated a public education programme focused on hand hygiene, highlighting the significance of handwashing in preventing the transmission of diseases. This initiative aligns with global efforts to commemorate World Hand Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 5, aiming to curb communicable diseases.
According to Ghana News Agency, the programme was spearheaded by Madam Dora Kugbonu, Health Promotion Officer at Keta. She noted that research indicates approximately 90 percent of illnesses are transmitted via hands. The educational event aims to underline the importance of washing hands with running water to prevent diseases. The programme was designed to instruct the public on proper handwashing techniques and to emphasize the role of hand hygiene in disease prevention.
Madam Kugbonu explained that the directorate’s efforts include educating residents about proper handwashing techniques. This involves washing hands under clean running water using soap, ensuring thorough cleaning, and using hand sanitizers to eliminate germs. She stressed that good hand hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of infection and promote overall health.
The public education programme targets various groups, including schools, markets, churches, mosques, and other public venues within the Keta municipality. The directorate collaborates with schools, community leaders, and organizations to disseminate hand hygiene practices. The initiative commenced on May 5, 2025, and is set to conclude on May 9, 2025, coinciding with a child health promotion week.
Madam Kugbonu highlighted the expected positive impact of the programme, aiming to reduce disease spread and improve public health in Keta. The directorate plans to continue promoting hand hygiene and other health-related issues, ensuring community access to vital health information. The theme for the 2025 World Hand Hygiene Day was ‘WHO SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands’.
