Keta MCE Orders Immediate Halt on Reclaimed Land Deals

Keta: Mr Wisdom Seade, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Keta in the Volta Region, has issued an immediate directive to halt all sales, leases, and development projects on reclaimed land in the municipality. This directive is aimed at facilitating a thorough investigation into the issues surrounding these lands.

According to Ghana News Agency, the directive follows a call from Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, urging the MCE to take a leading role in addressing concerns related to the reclaimed land. A press release dated Tuesday, April 22, and signed by Mr Seade, emphasized that the directive was initially issued by the Regional Minister on April 14. It mandates the cessation of all activities related to the development of reclaimed lands.

The release further instructs that stakeholders must immediately comply with these directives until the investigation concludes. Individuals or groups with interests in the reclaimed land are required to submit copies of their land permits, architectural and structural designs, and other valid land documents to Mr Innocent Komla Gawua, the Municipal Coordinating Director. These documents should be submitted between Wednesday, April 23 and Wednesday, May 14, to facilitate a comprehensive investigation and timely reporting.

Furthermore, the release calls for cooperation from all stakeholders, developers, and individuals to ensure a smooth investigative process. A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the reclaimed land sites in Keta revealed no ongoing activities, with construction halted in compliance with the directive.

Residents engaged by the Ghana News Agency expressed their approval of the initiative taken by the Regional Minister and the MCE. They highlighted the importance of these directives in addressing longstanding controversies surrounding the acquisition processes of the reclaimed lands. Allegations have surfaced that former government appointees distributed the land among themselves and party affiliates, underscoring the need for a thorough investigation to clarify these claims and establish proper acquisition procedures.
