Sekondi: Karpowership Ghana, in collaboration with the Sekondi Naval Base, has planted 3,000 tree seedlings to mark World Environment Day. The initiative is part of this year’s theme, ‘Restoring Degraded Landscapes’.
According to Ghana News Agency, 100 seedlings were planted at the Sekondi Naval Base, which hosts the Karpowership vessel. The remaining seedlings are destined for degraded forest reserves and illegal mining sites in the region. Since 2021, the company has planted 11,000 tree seedlings in Greater Accra and the Western Regions, supporting Ghana’s reforestation efforts through the Tree for Life initiative.
Ms. Sandra Amarquaye, Communication Manager at Karpowership, stated that the event under the sub-theme ‘Plant Today, Power Tomorrow’ reflects the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. She emphasized that the day was about more than just planting trees; it was about fostering a culture of environmental protection. Ms. Amarquaye expressed gratitude to the Western Regional Coordinating Council, Sekondi Naval Base, and the Forestry Commission for their support.
Mr. Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, reiterated the government’s commitment to the Tree for Life initiative, pledging to restore and reclaim degraded forests nationwide. He stressed the importance of nurturing planted seedlings to ensure their survival and called on chiefs and community leaders to actively monitor and supervise tree planting activities.
Mr. Elikem Kotoko, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, acknowledged the degradation caused by illegal mining but expressed optimism about reclaiming lands through collective efforts. He advocated for forming forest clubs and festivals to attract tourists and suggested involving chiefs and the media for public education.
Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, praised Karpowership Ghana for its commitment to sustaining the Tree for Life initiative. He assured that the command would nurture the seedlings to grow into mature trees, contributing to a greener and safer environment.
The event was attended by pupils, students, religious leaders, and staff from the Forestry Commission and Sekondi Naval Base.
