Jegri Bekala’s Selection to Mine in Dormaa Is Based on Merit – Board of Governors

Accra: Barimah Twumasi Bekoe II, a member of the Board of Governors of Jegri Bekala Limited, a mining company, asserts that the company's selection to conduct mining operations in the Dormaa Central Municipality and Dormaa East District in the Bono Region is grounded on their merit.

According to Ghana News Agency, Barimah Bekoe II detailed that the decision to permit Jegri Bekala Limited to engage in large-scale surface and alluvial gold mining activities in the area is based on their solid track record. He highlighted that the decision by the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeyo Agyemang Badu II, aims to combat illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey, which have been causing extensive environmental and health issues in the region.

Barimah Bekoe II elaborated that the selection process was rigorous, involving careful scrutiny and background checks of three mining companies before settling on Jegri Bekala Limited. This decision was made after ensuring that the company's operations would be in line with sustainable and responsible mining practices.

The announcement came during a stakeholder's engagement organized by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) at Aboabo Number Two, which was attended by local chiefs, queens, assembly members, and community leaders. The meeting focused on discussing Jegri Bekala Limited's mining activities in Amasu and Kyeremasu.

Barimah Bekoe II further explained that Jegri Bekala Limited is committed to local employment, with a policy to recruit 60 percent of its workforce from local communities, prioritizing local skilled labor. Additionally, the company plans to engage in fair negotiations with landowners and farmers for any necessary compensation related to their mining operations, emphasizing their dedication to regional development.
