Accra: Mr Dominic Nitiwul, former Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has sparked a debate regarding the health of legislators and Ghanaians at large, emphasizing the importance of being mindful about daily food consumption.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Nitiwul made these remarks during a parliamentary session on the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill, 2025. He advised citizens to steer clear of fatty foods due to their negative health implications. "If you have protruding stomach, you're sick because of accumulation of fat. And so, you need to look at the food you eat and pay attention to your health," he stated.
The Bimbilla legislator clarified that his comments were not intended to label overweight individuals as sick. His remarks prompted Mr Bernard Ahiafor, the MP for Akatsi South and First Deputy Speaker, to humorously dub it the "Nitiwul theory," eliciting laughter across the parliamentary chamber.
In related discussions, Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, appealed to the House to support the Fisheries and Aquaculture Bill. She highlighted that the legislation would enhance sustainable exploitation of the nation's fisheries resources and promote the long-term management and conservation of marine life and ecosystems. Moreover, the bill aims to help Ghana avoid the 'yellow card' penalty impacting its fisheries exports to the European Union.
