Hostile Political Atmosphere of Volta, A Thing of the Past – Dr Letsa

Governance

Accra: Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, the immediate past Volta Regional Minister, has declared that the previously hostile political atmosphere in the Volta Region is now a relic of the past. He noted that there is increased tolerance and respect for diverse political views, which marks a significant improvement in the region's political climate.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Letsa highlighted in an interview that the region, once dominated by expectations for loyalty to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has evolved into a more tolerant environment. Previously, political affiliations outside of NDC could result in hostility, such as stone-pelting incidents. However, recent visits by members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have shown a warmer reception, with members wearing NPP t-shirts without any controversy, indicating a significant reduction in political hostility.

Dr Letsa expressed satisfaction in leaving the region in a peaceful state, contrasting it with the situation he inherited in 2017, marked by the Alavanyo-Nkonya conflict. The conflict, which previously caused sleepless nights due to fears of violence, required a concerted effort from National Security, local peace councils, and community leaders to bring under control.

Furthermore, Dr Letsa addressed the disturbances caused by the Trans-Volta Togoland secessionist group, which, despite being an embarrassing incident, lacked local support and was effectively managed through collaboration with regional chiefs and political parties.

Security concerns at the eastern border, exacerbated by terrorism threats in neighboring Togo, were another focus for Dr Letsa. He credited the region's security agencies for maintaining peace and security in the area.

Dr Letsa also emphasized the success in promoting tourism in the region, with initiatives such as the Volta Fair in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI). The 2021 Volta Trade and Investment Fair was particularly successful, drawing numerous visitors and boosting the local economy.

Under his leadership, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council was recognized as the best in the country for four consecutive years, from 2021 to 2024, showcasing the region's progress and development during his tenure.
