Accra: The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed dissatisfaction with the rescheduling of a meeting on the implementation of their Conditions of Service (COS) from June 26 to July 10, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the association had initially agreed to call off its strike on June 13 after a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, pending the outcome of a follow-up meeting with the committee set for June 26. However, the meeting has now been postponed, causing concern among GRNMA members.
Ms Perpetual Ofori, President of the GRNMA, stated at a media briefing in Accra that the unilateral rescheduling of the meeting was perceived as being in bad faith, as it would further delay the implementation of four key items in their COS. She emphasized the association's demand for the implementation of these items no later than July 2025, warning that any further delays would prompt the association to take action.
The items in question include an eight percent increase on basic and uniform allowance for all members, fuel allowance for approximately 5,000 senior staff, and a book and research allowance for about 6,000 members. Ms Ofori indicated that while the association is flexible regarding the implementation of other items, they expect those to be completed by January 2026.
The President also shared that the association received a letter from the Parliamentary Services on June 25, 2025, citing the unavailability of some key stakeholders who were outside the jurisdiction as the reason for the suspension of the meeting. Despite this, the National Council of the Association, during its meeting on June 25, 2025, maintained the suspension of the strike in good faith and expects reciprocity from the committee.
Ms Ofori noted that the GRNMA has decided to trust that their engagement with the Ministries of Health and Finance will be productive. The association demands that clear timelines be established and signed off during the meeting on July 10, 2025, to ensure there is no ambiguity in the implementation schedule.
The GRNMA President expressed gratitude to the nursing and midwifery fraternity for their solidarity during this period and urged them to remain steadfast while waiting for updates and necessary actions from the National Council.
The GRNMA had embarked on a series of industrial actions starting June 2, culminating in the total withdrawal of nursing and midwifery services on June 9, 2025, until the strike was suspended on June 13, 2025. Ms Ofori indicated that the decision to suspend the strike was influenced by the intervention of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and the appeals of Ghanaians, particularly patients.
