Government Set to Review National Pensions Scheme: President Mahama

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Government will soon initiate a review of the national Pensions scheme as part of efforts to address existing challenges. The Government plans to engage with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and organized labor on the matter of Pensions.

According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama revealed the plan during a courtesy call at the Presidency in Accra by a delegation from the Ghana Association of Teachers (GNAT), led by its Secretary-General Mr. Thomas Tanko Musah. The GNAT leadership visited to congratulate President Mahama on his victory in the December 7, 2024, general election.

President Mahama recalled that during the May Day Celebration, the TUC raised concerns about the need for a reevaluation of the Pensions system. He acknowledged that while some unions like GNAT appeared satisfied, others expressed discontent. The President suggested a review conference on Pensions could be beneficial.

He emphasized that it has been several years since the Pension reform was introduced, indicating the need for a review to assess its effectiveness and make necessary adjustments. President Mahama expressed gratitude to GNAT for their contributions to national development and for their investments.

President Mahama assured GNAT of his commitment to improving the working and living conditions of teachers. He highlighted the essential role of teachers in the education system and nation-building, emphasizing the need for their compensation, conducive working environments, and access to professional growth opportunities.

Mr. Thomas Tanko Musah, on behalf of GNAT, congratulated President Mahama on his election victory. He expressed confidence that President Mahama would deliver on his campaign promises, particularly those concerning teachers.

Mr. Musah invited President Mahama to be the special guest of honour at the GNAT National Delegate Congress in January 2026. Additionally, Mr. Kwame Pianim, an economist and GNAT Consultant, praised President Mahama as a responsible leader capable of steering the nation through its current challenges.
