Government Pledges Support to Ghana Navy with New Simulator Facility

Nutekpor: Ms Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew Appiah-Oppong, the Legal Counsel to President John Dramani Mahama, announced the government's commitment to supporting the Ghana Navy and security agencies in fulfilling their mandates. The government recognizes maritime security as integral to the development of the nation's blue economy, which they aim to prioritize through training and supportive policies.

According to Ghana News Agency, Ms. Appiah-Oppong conveyed this assurance on President Mahama's behalf during the commissioning of a state-of-the-art 'Full Mission Bridge Simulator' (FMBS) at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) in Nutekpor, Volta Region. The facility, valued at over USD 370,000, includes a 270-degree Full Mission Bridge Simulator, three 120-degree Part-task simulators, a Briefing Room, Server Room, two Instructor Stations, and offices for instructors, marking a significant advancement for the Ghana Navy's operational and training capacities.

Securing Ghana's maritime space is seen as crucial for unlocking the full potential of the country's blue economy. Ms. Appiah-Oppong noted that successful maritime security worldwide has led to thriving fisheries and increased maritime trade, goals that Ghana aims to replicate to foster job creation and economic growth. The government plans to continue prioritizing maritime security, positioning Ghana as a leader in Africa's maritime sector.

Ms. Appiah-Oppong also mentioned the ongoing procurement process for two Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Ghana Navy. The government intends to assess and expedite this acquisition to enhance the Navy's operational assets, aiding in resource protection and crime deterrence. Furthermore, the government plans to train youths for offshore and fisheries industry roles, potentially exporting skilled seafarers like nations such as the Philippines and India.

The new simulation centre is not only a training facility for the Ghana Navy but also a gateway to excellence, equipping seafarers with necessary skills for a fast-evolving industry. She encouraged industry players to adopt simulation technologies for practical training and workforce development.

Ms. Appiah-Oppong expressed gratitude to the Danish Government for their support of the Ghana Navy and Armed Forces, particularly acknowledging Ambassador Tom Norring and Defence Attach© Lieutenant Colonel Lasse Sand. Denmark's partnership has been vital in strengthening maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.

Commodore BO Overgaard from the Royal Danish Navy affirmed Denmark's commitment to collaborating with Ghana to enhance maritime security, maintain trade routes, and protect fishery resources. Vice Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, Chief of the Naval Staff, emphasized the facility's role in advancing training programs, enabling personnel to master complex navigation and operational scenarios safely. Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi highlighted the steady development of NAVTRAC facilities since its establishment a decade ago.
