Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a comprehensive GHS1 billion plan aimed at retooling the nation's security services. This strategic initiative is part of the government's commitment to bolster the operational capabilities of the security forces, ensuring they can effectively fulfill their roles.
According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama disclosed this significant investment while accepting a GHS1 million donation from 11 agencies under the Ministry for the Interior, intended to support the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares). The donation was presented at the Presidency by Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police, representing the contributing agencies.
The funds were amassed through voluntary contributions from senior officers across various agencies within the Ministry for the Interior. The Mahama Cares Fund, established as part of President Mahama's campaign pledge, aims to ease the financial burdens of individuals battling chronic non-communicable diseases, including cancer and diabetes.
Addressing the urgent needs of the Ghana National Fire Service, President Mahama highlighted the critical shortage of fire equipment and expressed understanding for the challenges faced by Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong. He noted that the last delivery of fire tenders occurred nearly a decade ago, resulting in many being non-operational. The public was urged to remain patient as efforts are made to procure new fire tenders.
Regarding the Police Service, President Mahama emphasized the daily risks officers face, particularly when confronting armed robbers. He underscored the necessity of providing armor-plated vehicles for patrol and highway duties to enhance their safety and effectiveness.
For the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Prisons Service, President Mahama acknowledged the dire need for improved mobility. Many of their vehicles are over a decade old and in disrepair, prompting the government to prioritize acquiring new vehicles to enhance officer mobility.
President Mahama reassured the security services of the government's dedication to supporting them in their mandate to protect the nation, pledging to provide the necessary equipment and logistics to facilitate their duties effectively.
