GOC President Congratulates Black Rockets, Urges Pursuit of Youth Olympics Qualification

Accra: Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, has commended the national amateur boxing team, Black Rockets, for their outstanding performance at the 2025 Africa Youth Boxing Championship. He encouraged the team to leverage their success as a foundation for qualifying for the upcoming Youth Olympics in Senegal.According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghanaian team, consisting of Desmond Pappoe, Mathias Ashitey, and George Dowuona, achieved remarkable success by securing three gold medals at the continental event. The team, under the leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation, visited the GOC President to officially present the medals and discuss strengthening ties between the two organizations.During the ceremony, Mr. Akpokavie emphasized that the athletes' achievements have not only elevated the boxing community but also brought honor to the Ghana Olympic Committee. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and support from the Sports Ministry to further the country's success in international sports.Mr. Akpokavie assured that the Ghana Olympic Committee is formulating plans to prepare athletes for long-term projects aimed at transforming the sports landscape. He reiterated the Olympic movement's commitment to providing the necessary support to help the Black Rockets achieve their objectives.He urged the team to focus on qualifying for the Youth Olympics, which would provide a global stage to showcase their talents. Mr. Akpokavie encouraged the athletes to seize upcoming opportunities and continue winning medals for Ghana.The GOC President also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Boxing Federation's leadership in guiding the amateur boxing team. Mr. Bernard Quartey, President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, expressed gratitude to Mr. Akpokavie for his supportive remarks, recognizing the GOC's role in the sport's development.Mr. Quartey praised the dedication of the three boxers despite limited resources and appealed for continued support from the GOC to achieve the federatio n's goals of Olympic qualification and medal success for Ghana.
