Accra: The GLICO General Insurance has disbursed insurance benefits and donations amounting to GHS2 million to the families of the national heroes who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash on August 6.
According to Ghana News Agency, the package included a GHS100,000 donation to the Children's Support Fund, established for the welfare of the victims' children, and another GHS100,000 to the Ghana Armed Forces. The benefits were presented to the families during a ceremony at the GLICO House in Accra. Madam Shamima Muslim, the Deputy Government Spokesperson, accepted the donation to the Children's Support Fund on behalf of the President.
The tragic incident involved a Z-9 helicopter carrying Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the late Minister of Defence; Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, the late Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology; Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, the late Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, the late Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Samuel Aboagye, the late Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organisation. Also on board were Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo from the Ghana Air Force. They were en route to Obuasi for a national assignment on illegal mining when the crash occurred in Sikaman, Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region.
Mr. Andrew Achampong-Kyei, Managing Director of GLICO General, expressed that the insurance benefits aim to provide stability and comfort to the victims' families during their time of grief. He emphasized the importance of insurance, urging government entities to view it as a necessity rather than a luxury. Mr. Achampong-Kyei also called upon Parliament to enforce existing laws to ensure compliance.
Mr. Edward Forkuo Kyei, CEO of GLICO Group, highlighted the enduring memory of the eight heroes as a testament to their loyalty, humility, and love for Ghana. He offered words of comfort to the grieving families, expressing solidarity with them.
Madam Shamima Muslim thanked GLICO General for their support and acknowledged the generosity shown by corporate Ghana since the President announced the Children's Support Fund. She urged the media to respect the families' privacy during this difficult time.
