ACCRA: Ghana has been praised by the Commonwealth Observer Group for its exemplary conduct during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, earning the title of the "real shining star" of Africa. The observer group commended Ghana for its democratic advancements and peaceful election process, urging other countries to learn from its experience.According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Eric Mokgweetsi Masisi, former President of Botswana and leader of the observer group, expressed his appreciation for the Government and relevant institutions during a visit to the Police Headquarters in Accra. He noted the significant role played by the Ghana Police Service in maintaining law and order without resorting to force, describing their approach as informed, alert, and decisive.The Commonwealth Observer Group, comprising a 17-member delegation from the Commonwealth and supported by eight staff from the Commonwealth Secretariat, was deployed by Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, the Secretary-General of the Commonweal th. The mission began on November 29 and involved consultations with key stakeholders, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police. The group's mandate is set to conclude on December 13, at which point they will submit their findings and recommendations to the Commonwealth Secretariat and member states.Dr. Masisi acknowledged that while no election is entirely free of incidents, the quick and effective responses from institutions like the police were commendable in handling any issues that arose. He emphasized Ghana's role as a model for democratic values and peace, encouraging the nation to share its experiences with the wider Commonwealth to inspire similar ideals globally.The observer group concluded by thanking the Ghanaian people, the police, and all stakeholders involved for their unified commitment to delivering a successful election.
