Ghana Water Limited to Prosecute Over 800 Individuals for Illegal Water Connections in Accra West

Accra: Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Accra West Region has announced plans to initiate legal action against more than 800 individuals who failed to regularise their illegal water connections despite a grace period offered by the utility provider. The move follows a detection exercise carried out by the company between the last quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025.According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise revealed nearly 1,500 illegal water connection cases across its 12 district operational areas. A press release signed and issued by Mrs. Solace Akomeah, Communications Manager, Accra West Region, GWL, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the grace period offered by management was part of efforts to give offenders a chance to come forward and legalise their connections without penalty. However, a significant number of culprits had refused to comply with the directive.'These illegal connections not only deprive GWL of much-needed revenue but also contribute to water losses and service di sruptions for law-abiding customers,' the statement read. GWL, the statement noted, had resolved to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service to prosecute all non-compliant individuals. It warned that illegal connections were a form of theft that threatened the sustainability of water supply systems.'GWL will not allow the actions of a few to undermine the hard work of its staff or the rights of its loyal customers,' the company stated. The utility provider urged the public to support its efforts by reporting illegal connections in their communities, reiterating its commitment to fair water distribution and improved service delivery.
