Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Announce Service Withdrawals Over Delayed Agreement

Accra: The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced a phased withdrawal of services beginning in early June 2025. This industrial action is to protest the government's delay in implementing their collective agreement.

According to Ghana News Agency, the industrial action was disclosed in a press statement signed by Mrs. Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, President of the association. The agreement, which covers all nurses and midwives in Ghana, was signed in May 2024 by the GRNMA, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. However, it remains unimplemented a year later.

The GRNMA's industrial action will commence with the withdrawal of all Out-Patient Department (OPD) services nationwide from June 4th to June 8th, 2025. The association has warned that if their demands are not addressed during this initial period, a complete withdrawal of all services will begin on June 9th, 2025.

The association has urged all its members to wear red armbands on June 2nd and 3rd, 2025, as a visible protest before the service withdrawals. While reaffirming its commitment to dialogue, the Association emphasizes that the full implementation of their collective agreement is the only solution to the current impasse. The GRNMA calls on all nurses and midwives to strictly adhere to this roadmap for industrial action.
