Ghana Immigration Service Repatriates 32 West African Nationals Over Cybercrime

Accra: The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully repatriated 32 West African nationals suspected of engaging in cyber fraud, specifically romance scams. The individuals, comprising 24 Nigerians and 8 Togolese, were arrested during joint intelligence-led operations in Akatsi and Ho in the Volta Region. The operations were conducted by the GIS, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Maud Anima Quainoo, Deputy Commissioner of GIS, revealed that the suspects, all males, had entered Ghana through unapproved routes. They were reportedly coerced by kingpins, who initially promised them legitimate employment opportunities, into engaging in cybercrime activities. The suspects were contacted via social media applications and lured by false promises.

The individuals, aged between 18 and 35 years, were treated as victims of human trafficking and have been repatriated to their respective home countries. Items retrieved during the operations included 33 mobile phones, 3 power banks, 1 Toyota Corolla car key, 3 type C chargers, and an airpod with one earpiece missing. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the masterminds behind this operation.

As the world marks Cyber Security Month, the GIS has warned the public, particularly the youth, about the dangers of cybercrime recruitments and human trafficking. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and security conscious, reporting suspicious activities, especially in houses with large concentrations of foreigners, to the nearest Immigration office to help maintain national security.

The GIS also urged landlords and property owners to exercise due diligence when renting out properties to foreign nationals, as harboring illegal immigrants is an offense under Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573. The GIS remains committed to protecting Ghana's borders and ensuring compliance with immigration laws.
