Ghana Government Releases Initial GH?25 Million Allowance to Assembly Members

Accra: The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, has initiated the distribution of allowances to Assembly Members by releasing GH?25 million to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA). This release marks the first installment of a GH?100 million allocation designed to provide monthly consolidated allowances to Assembly Members nationwide.

According to Ghana News Agency, as of Monday, July 14, 2025, the Ministry had distributed a total of GH?23,621,000 to cover allowances for the months of April and May. Each of the 9,085 Assembly Members will receive GH?1,300.00 per month to aid them in fulfilling their responsibilities effectively.

During a press conference, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for MLGCRA, explained that the allocation stems from the 'Resetting Ghana Agenda.' This initiative was detailed in the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, where the government earmarked GH?100 million for the allowances. The Ministry requested the release of these funds from the Ministry of Finance on June 12, 2025, leading to the current distribution.

The Minister highlighted the program's goal of empowering Assembly Members with financial resources and logistical support to enhance their oversight of government projects and programs within their constituencies. He emphasized the importance of Ghana's decentralization agenda, which aims to shift power, responsibilities, and resources to local authorities, facilitating grassroots participation in decision-making and improving service delivery.

Mr. Ibrahim acknowledged the challenges faced by this agenda, such as the recent centralization of resources, which had adversely affected the performance of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). To counter this, President Mahama committed to directing 80 percent of the District Assembly Common Fund to all MMDAs, a policy currently being executed.

The Minister concluded by affirming the government's commitment to ensuring the steady transfer of resources and logistics to MMDAs, thus promoting efficient service delivery to the citizens.
