Ex NFL Player Doug Martin Dies in Police Custody After Oakland Break-In

Oakland: Former NFL running back, Doug Martin, died while in police custody after a break-in, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) said on Monday. The 36-year-old died on Saturday during a police operation, the OPD stated in a Facebook post.

According to Ghana News Agency, prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland. During the incident, responding officers attempted to detain him, leading to a brief struggle. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics arrived at the scene, provided medical aid, and transported Martin to a local hospital, where he later died.

The OPD has launched an investigation into Martin's death. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted Martin in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, expressed their condolences, stating that the player made a lasting impact on their franchise. They highlighted that Martin was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time.

In his NFL career spanning seven seasons, Martin scored 30 rushing touchdowns and two more on catches. He was selected to the Pro Bowl twice and was named to the NFL's First Team All-Pro once. Martin played six seasons with the Buccaneers and one season with the then-Oakland Raiders, who have since relocated to Las Vegas. His last NFL game was in December 2018.
