Accra: As Ghana approaches its December 7, 2024, general elections, the Ghana Conference of Religions for Peace (GCRP) has called on citizens to maintain peace and adhere to the principles of the Golden Rule, which advocates treating others as one wishes to be treated. The inter-religious council emphasized the importance of upholding values like human dignity, mutual respect, tolerance, and unity during the electoral process.According to Ghana News Agency, the GCRP, through a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Hajj Muhammad Amir Kpakpo Addo, urged Ghanaians to embrace the nation's diversity as a strength and work towards the shared goal of a harmonious, peaceful, and prosperous Ghana. The statement appealed to citizens to respect the electoral process, acknowledging the significance of every vote and voice, and to avoid divisive language and hate speech, promoting instead constructive dialogue and engagement.The statement further emphasized the role of faith communities in fostering tolerance, understanding, and mutual respect, recognizing differences as blessings and encouraging efforts to understand varying perspectives and beliefs. It called upon religious leaders to champion peace, harmony, and justice at this critical time.The GCRP also urged all stakeholders, including political leaders, citizens, and security agencies, to prioritize peace and stability over all else. It encouraged collaborative efforts to prevent conflict and ensure a smooth transition, regardless of the election results. Winning candidates were reminded to view their victories as calls to service, while losing candidates were encouraged to accept outcomes graciously and learn from the electorate.The statement called on people of faith to pray for peace, wisdom, and guidance during this significant period, expressing hope that collective prayers and efforts would usher in an era of peace, prosperity, and unity for Ghana. It concluded by invoking the African philosophy of Ubuntu, emphasizing unity in the pursuit of peace and a brighter future for all.The GCRP comprises various religious organizations, including the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference, Christian Council of Ghana, Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Office of the National Chief Imam, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches, Council of Independent Churches, and Council for African Instituted Churches - Ghana.
