GBA Extraordinary Congress Targets New Reforms

Accra: The Extraordinary Congress of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has successfully been held, with delegates requesting the National Sports Authority (NSA) to extend the mandate of the recomposed board for three months. The motion tabled by delegates was to enable the formulation of a working roadmap for the development of the sport.

According to Ghana News Agency, at the Extraordinary Congress held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, boxers also requested more delegates while coaches demanded recognition and appropriate rewards for their efforts. Stakeholders represented at the congress included matchmakers, coaches, boxers, managers, and promoters.

Managers and promoters expressed their readiness to cooperate with recommendations towards making Ghana boxing better and in line with international standards and levels. A new date, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, was fixed for a workshop to discuss the boxing ecosystem. No financial statement was read, however, delegates made positive contributions and suggestions.

Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the NSA Boss, praised the boxing fraternity for their modest approach to current happenings, hoping for an amicable implementation of the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee. He called for unity among the boxing fraternity, stressing the importance of being united to negotiate effectively on the international stage.

The current board of the GBA has had their tenure extended to one month to avoid a vacuum and to ensure stakeholder engagement in the normalization process. Mr. Waliwu Alhassan, who represented the Northern Sector Boxing Association, petitioned for the inclusion of the northern regions in GBA activities, acknowledging their history of producing champions.

Mr. Roger Barnor, Acting President of GBA, thanked the delegates for a successful congress and reiterated the need for unity. Other dignitaries present at the congress included Mr. Charles Amofa, the Public Relations Officer of NSA; Nii Gonti Adjor I; Alhaji Toffik, Lawyer Sam Laryea, Legal Adviser of GBA, Dr. Eric Tetteh, Medical Representative, Shadrack Acquaye, GBA Secretary, Andrew Nortey, PRO, and Sammy Heywood Okine.

Veteran boxing consultant Yoofi Boham was present, as well as Bernard Quartey, president of the Ghana Boxing Federation.
