Shai Hills: The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Elsie Initiative Fund (EIF) for Uniformed Women in Peace Operation have commissioned a 200-bed dormitory block at the Army Recruit School in Shai Hills. The dormitory block includes 15 washrooms, 200 bunk beds, and an ironing room to support female accommodation and empower more women to join the army.
According to Ghana News Agency, Brigadier General Samuel Yeboah Asare, the General Officer Commanding the Southern Command, highlighted that the existing facilities were traditionally designed for male recruits, making the new building essential for facilitating female recruit training. He noted that the GAF has been increasing female trainee intake in alignment with the United Nations agenda on gender equality and peace. The Army Recruits Training Schools trained 830 recruits last year, 224 of whom were females, prompting the need for additional facilities.
Dr. Afua Ansere, the Senior Gender Specialist for UN Women, stated that the facility, funded through a 1.5-million-dollar project, showcases Ghana's commitment to overcoming barriers that limit women's participation in peacekeeping. She emphasized the GAF's leadership in gender inclusivity and efforts to recruit, retain, and deploy women across various roles. The project aligns with the recommendations of the Measuring Opportunities for Women in Peace Operations report, which highlights the need for adequate infrastructure.
Ms. Elsa Mouelhi-Rondeau, representing the Canadian High Commissioner, noted that the dormitory is one of two funded by the Elsie Initiative Fund in Ghana. She explained that the initiative, launched by Canada in 2017, aims to increase women's participation in UN peace operations. By deploying more women, countries can better fulfill their mandates and protect civilians. She stressed the importance of providing environments adapted to women's needs to attract and retain female talent.
Brigadier General Augustine Asiedu, Director General for International Peace Support Operations, praised the EIF's funding, while Group Captain Theodora Ajornyo, Gender Policy Advisor to the Chief of Defence Staff, pointed out the facility's role in promoting gender mainstreaming in the GAF. She noted that increasing women's leadership and decision-making participation is crucial, and the new structure will support recruiting more women for combat roles.
