MDPI’s Role in National Development Crucial – Fair Wages and Salaries CEO

Accra: Dr. George Smith-Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), emphasizes the critical role of the Management Development and Productivity Institute's (MDPI) operations in national development.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Smith-Graham highlighted the challenges of linking public sector pay to productivity, acknowledging MDPI as an essential partner in assessing productivity. He mentioned this during a courtesy visit to Prof. Elijah Yendaw, Director General of the MDPI, to explore collaborative efforts aimed at improving efficiency across government institutions.

Dr. Smith-Graham stated that the visit aimed to formally introduce himself to the MDPI and examine potential collaborative efforts. He reiterated the importance of MDPI in developing productivity indicators essential for a successful 24-hour economy. He further emphasized the necessity of collaboration with MDPI as they transition toward an Independent Emolument Commission to determine public servants' salaries.

Dr. Smith-Graham expressed the urgency of establishing an independent Emolument Commission to rationalize salaries, especially in alignment with President John Dramani Mahama's reset agenda. He expressed confidence in MDPI's support in this endeavor.

Prof. Yendaw, Director General of MDPI, expressed gratitude for the FWSC's visit, recognizing the potential for both entities to enhance productivity measurement and improvement in government institutions. He outlined MDPI's primary goal of boosting productivity in public organizations to foster economic growth.

Prof. Yendaw identified challenges such as low productivity in the public sector and announced plans to implement training for attitudinal change in various public institutions. He also emphasized MDPI's readiness to collaborate with FWSC in developing national productivity metrics to tackle productivity assessment challenges in various agencies.

Additionally, Prof. Yendaw urged the FWSC to review and address salary structure discrepancies at MDPI, advocating for improved incentives for staff to contribute effectively to national development. He called on the Commission to examine and rectify the current scheme of service, which he described as inadequate.
