Former Deputy Minister Urges Protection of Children’s Rights Amid Rising Abuse Concerns

Duayaw-Nkwanta: Dr Freda Prempeh, former Deputy Minister of Gender and Social Protection, has called for increased efforts to safeguard children from exploitation, abuse, and maltreatment. She emphasized the importance of viewing children as national, rather than merely family, assets, highlighting child abuse as a severe human rights violation that hinders their growth and development. Dr Prempeh urged for decisive actions to uphold children's rights and dignity.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Prempeh, who is also the Founder of the Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF), made these remarks during an interview in response to a viral video showing a young child enduring brutal physical assault. The Ghana Police Service reported that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Dr Prempeh elaborated that UWF is a non-governmental organization focused on empowering indigenous and vulnerable women and girls, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their communities and society at large. She expressed concern over the many boys, girls, and elderly women who suffer emotional and physical abuse, particularly in deprived communities.

Highlighting the crucial role of public cooperation, Dr Prempeh stressed that security services and relevant institutions need public support to identify and halt child abuse. She encouraged individuals to report violations to the police and emphasized the importance of punishing offenders to protect children's dignity and human rights.
