Sunyani: Mr Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has announced his intention to vie for the flagbearership position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2028 elections. This move aims to position Opoku as a successor to President John Dramani Mahama and lead the NDC to victory in the upcoming political contest.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Collins Mahama, the NDC's Communication Officer in the 'Brong-Ahafo', revealed the minister's intentions. Mr Opoku, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Asunafo South constituency in the Ahafo Region, has expressed his aspirations to party allies. Mr Mahama, a close associate of Opoku, confirmed the development in an interview in Sunyani, stating that Opoku has formally communicated his ambitions.
Reacting to social media flyers depicting the minister as a presidential aspirant for the NDC in 2028, Mr Mahama affirmed Opoku's candidacy. He noted that the minister is preparing to enter the flagbearership race pending the party's announcement of nominations. Emphasizing the minister's grassroots support, Mahama expressed confidence in Opoku's potential to lead the NDC to a decisive victory.
Mr Mahama, formerly the Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, emphasized Opoku's broad appeal, suggesting that his candidacy would require minimal resources to promote. He argued that the minister's early declaration aligns with the party's evolving internal dynamics and the need for proactive preparation to succeed President Mahama.
