Fisheries Alliance Backs Emelia Arthur’s Appointment as Fisheries Minister

Accra: The Fisheries Alliance, a civil society organization focused on the fisheries sector, has expressed strong support for the appointment of Madam Emelia Arthur as the Minister-designate for the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD). The organization has highlighted Arthur's qualifications and experience as key assets for the role.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kyei Kwadwo Yamoah, the convener for the Fisheries Alliance, praised President John Dramani Mahama's decision to nominate Arthur. He mentioned that stakeholders in the fisheries sector are eager to collaborate with her to implement critical policies outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto concerning fisheries. Yamoah emphasized Arthur's extensive experience in fisheries, agriculture, natural resources management, and gender inclusion as factors that would enable her to deliver effectively in her new role.

Mr. Yamoah further noted that Arthur has a proven track record of working with fisheries stakeholders and non-governmental organizations across Ghana. Her previous roles as the Deputy Regional Minister for the Western Region and the Shama District Chief Executive have seen her actively supporting initiatives aimed at improving the fisheries sector. Her advocacy for constructing modern fishing harbors and fish processing plants demonstrates her commitment to advancing the industry and creating job opportunities.

Arthur's involvement in initiatives such as the establishment of an Agriculture Support Scheme reflects her dedication to enhancing agricultural and fisheries development. The scheme aims to benefit local farmers and fishers, promoting growth in the region. Additionally, Arthur founded the Integrated Agricultural Development Initiative (IADI), which focuses on boosting food security, promoting sustainable practices, and increasing incomes for farmers and fishers. The initiative also emphasizes training and resource provision, particularly for women and youth, to strengthen agricultural and fisheries value chains.

Mr. Yamoah reiterated the anticipation of fisheries stakeholders for the implementation of policies from the NDC's manifesto. These include initiatives like the Mo-NE-YO pension scheme for informal sector workers, the revitalization of the fisheries and aquaculture sector, and promoting the blue economy through the Blue Economy Commission. Stakeholders expect these policies to support research, enforce sustainable practices, improve education in fishing communities, and develop alternative livelihoods to alleviate pressure on fish stocks. The establishment of Fisheries Services Centers (FiSC) by Landing Beach Committees is also anticipated to provide essential equipment and services to fisher folks.
