Destruction of Akufo-Addo Statue Sparks Outrage Among Sekondi-Takoradi Residents

Sekondi-Takoradi: A cross section of residents within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan area are disappointed at the destruction of the statue of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta roundabout in the Western Region. They described the destruction as dishonorable to authority, uncivilised and unruly action to be tolerated and condoned in a democratic society.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kofi Bonsu, a Public Servant, expressed that the act was unfair regardless of any personal grievances against the former President. He emphasized the importance of protecting the image of former leaders, likening it to the notion of not wishing harm upon even one's worst enemy. Mr. Bonsu lamented the apparent decline in morality and respect within communities, calling for a renewed focus on these values.

Mr. Obosu suggested initiating a national reorientation program focusing on values, beliefs, and symbols of the state, as well as honoring individuals who have contributed to the country's development. He expressed concern that without intervention, the destruction of state property and statues could become normalized.

Mr. Samuel Ackah echoed these sentiments, urging current state actors to condemn the destruction of the statue and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. He stressed that such acts should not become acceptable norms in society.

The President's statue, erected three months ago in 2024, had been a subject of debate among residents, with some questioning its significance given the region's ongoing development challenges. Critics argued that the roundabout itself symbolized unfinished business, undermining the statue's intended recognition of President Akufo-Addo's contributions.

In contrast, Nana Hima Dekyi XIV, President of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council, issued a statement highlighting the infrastructural projects attributed to the former President as justification for the statue. Despite this support, the region was shaken by the incident of vandalism, culminating in the statue's complete dismantling on the night of January 12, 2024.
