Accra: The Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA) in the Western Region organized a clean-up exercise across the municipality as part of its maiden Municipal Sanitation Day. The exercise, observed under the theme 'Operation Clean Your Frontage,' mobilized residents, shop owners, and businesses to clean their frontages to promote a safe and cleaner environment across the entire municipality.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Abdul Majeed Dokurgu, the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), led the exercise and announced that it would be conducted on the first Saturday of every month to ensure that the area remained clean and in good hygienic condition for all. The initiative aligns with the government's commitment to enhancing environmental cleanliness and promoting sustainable waste management in the municipality.
Mr. Dokurgu praised the residents for their substantial participation, stating, "In all the communities I have visited, I have seen that everyone is out to take part in the clean-up exercise, and the unique thing is that they are adhering to the theme for the exercise." He also mentioned that the Assembly had empowered certain youth groups to serve as a sanitation task force to maintain cleanliness in the communities even after the municipal-wide clean-up event.
He emphasized that moving forward, Assembly men, along with their unit committees and the task force, would take responsibility for ensuring the sustainability of the clean-up efforts. Additionally, Mr. Dokurgu highlighted that the Assembly would enforce its sanitation bylaws to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse in gutters, drainages, and the environment at large.
Mr. Musah Adamu, Assembly Member for Kwesimintsim Sofon Zongo, described the exercise as successful and commended the community for their active participation. He expressed hope that future clean-up events would receive similar levels of engagement to eliminate filth from the municipality entirely.
Madam Justina Bentum, a Kwesimintsim resident, applauded the EKMA for the initiative, stating, "It is through communal spirit like this that we can all contribute our quota to improve upon the sanitary condition of our municipality."
