EC Sets November 11 for By-Election in Anyako Electoral Area

Keta: The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a by-election for the Anyako Electoral Area in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, 2025. This follows the elevation of Mr. Wisdom Seade, the Assembly member for the area, to the position of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Keta, leaving the seat vacant.According to Ghana News Agency, the EC had earlier opened nominations for the by-election from Monday, October 6, closing on Thursday, October 16, 2025. This allowed interested aspirants to pick forms to contest the vacant position, in accordance with the Local Governance Acts, 2016 (Act 936) Amended as (Act 940). This regulation mandates the EC to conduct elections for vacant electoral areas and units arising from the death or resignation of an Assembly or Unit Committee member.GNA gathered that a total of five individuals have filed to contest for the vacant Assembly member position in the Anyako electoral area. A notice of poll is expected to be displa yed soon to inform the public of the event, per the procedures of the EC. The polls are expected to be conducted from 0700 hours to 1700 hours on the stipulated date, giving eligible voters ample time to cast their ballots.Mr. Roger Avorgbedor, the Electoral Commission's Returning Officer at Keta, assured the public in an interview with the GNA that all necessary materials and measures would be in place to ensure a fair and transparent election. He emphasized that this by-election is not a general election requiring new voter registration, but rather an opportunity for eligible voters to elect a representative to occupy the vacant seat.He urged electorates to adhere to the election procedures and guidelines for a successful exercise, enabling them to elect a representative to replace Mr. Seade. In addition to the by-election for the vacant Assembly member position, the EC will also conduct elections for unit committee members in areas with vacancies to ensure adequate representation at all levels of local governance.Mr. Avorgbedor noted that those who picked up nomination forms are expected to campaign, presenting their visions and missions to the electorate to secure votes during the elections. Residents in the Anyako Electoral Area expressed satisfaction with the EC's efforts and are eagerly awaiting the by-election, which is seen as crucial for determining the area's representation.Residents highlighted that the by-election is significant not just for Anyako but for the entire municipality, providing an opportunity for eligible residents to exercise their right to choose a leader who will collaborate with traditional and community leaders, as well as the MCE, to shape the area's future.The election is anticipated to proceed smoothly, with the EC working to ensure all necessary arrangements, including security and safety measures, are in place.
