Eastern Region Minister Urged to Address Chieftaincy Issues in Yilo Krobo

Somanya: Nene Nanekey Terkpertey Ofori Aggor IX, the Chief of Okper, has called on Ms. Rita Akosua Adjei Awaitey, the new Eastern Regional Minister, to assist in addressing chieftaincy issues within the Krobo areas. During a press briefing at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, the chief indicated that one of the major challenges facing the region was the matter of chieftaincy.

According to Ghana News Agency, Nene Nanekey urged the minister to leverage her position to explore the region's traditions and identify the rightful individuals for installation as chiefs. He expressed concerns about individuals appearing without proper lineage, even mentioning that ex-convicts were parading as chiefs, which contravenes the chieftaincy acts.

Nene Nanekey highlighted that the Chieftaincy Act prohibits anyone who has been convicted by a court from identifying themselves or being identified as a chief. He recommended reforms within the traditional council to ensure it effectively fulfils its responsibilities as a statutory entity.

The chief also urged the regional house of chiefs to investigate the judicial committee's activities, suggesting that financial gain was prioritized over truth in their case rulings. He noted that kingmakers and customs varied across communities, warning that chieftaincy issues could lead to conflicts if not addressed properly.

Emphasizing the need for equal application of the law, Nene Nanekey stressed the government's role in enforcing justice, ensuring that those found guilty in relevant cases are held accountable.
