Defence Minister Announces $1 Billion Retooling for Ghana Armed Forces

Accra: Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, has outlined a 15-point vision for retooling the Ghana Armed Forces as part of efforts to enhance its capabilities and readiness. Among the key components of this vision is a one-billion-dollar investment to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces over the next three and a half years.According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, announced during the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency in Accra, aims to provide the military with advanced tactical vehicles, body armour, and digital communication systems. The series is organized by the Presidency Communications Bureau to promote transparency and accountability in governance.The comprehensive retooling plan also includes enhancing the Ghana Air Force with new air assets, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and constructing 10,000 housing units across all garrisons. Additionally, the plan involves recruiting 12,000 personnel to increase the manpower of the Armed Forces and strengtheni ng bilateral and multilateral alliances.Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the importance of aligning the defense strategy with national development goals and enhancing local production through Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DHOC). He addressed security challenges such as chieftaincy disputes, illegal mining, violent extremism, and natural disasters, stressing the need for foresight and preparedness.The Minister also highlighted initiatives to promote diversity and inclusion within the Armed Forces, improve veterans' well-being through the Mahama Cares program, and build more health facilities with additional funding from DHOC. On National Service, Dr. Omane Boamah announced plans to train 10,000 youth in disaster preparedness and patriotism.Touching on national unity and progress, he emphasized collective responsibility and unity for Ghana's advancement. "As we stand at the threshold of a new era, the Mahama Second Coming, and resetting Ghana, let us remember that our strength lies in not just ou r arms, but in our unity, our resilience, and our unwavering commitment to Ghana's progress," the Minister stated.Dr. Omane Boamah urged Ghanaians to support the Ghana Armed Forces as guardians of peace and architects of prosperity, reinforcing the need to protect every citizen and propel the nation towards a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future. He concluded by reiterating that a modernized, expanded, responsive, and happier military remains the ultimate goal, viewing service in the Armed Forces not only as a duty but as a national covenant.
