Court Grants Trader Bail in Assault Case

Accra: A 45-year-old trader, who allegedly assaulted a woman, was granted a GHC15,000.00 bail with two sureties by the Kaneshie District Court Two. Perry Ohene Darko, arraigned for assault, had his plea not taken during the court proceedings.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Court stipulated that both sureties must reside within its jurisdiction, with one being a civil servant, which must be justified. Darko is expected to make a reappearance on August 15, 2025. The prosecution requested that Darko sign a bond to exhibit good behavior as a condition for the bail, a move that was unopposed by the defense counsel.

The defense counsel argued that Darko had a fixed place of abode within the court's jurisdiction and was prepared to appear whenever required. He also indicated that credible individuals were available to act as sureties for Darko.

The case arose from an incident involving Madam Doris Gyamfua Asabea, the complainant, and Darko, both traders and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). On June 25, 2025, after attending an NPP program at the Party Headquarters in Accra, Darko allegedly confronted Asabea over a social media video in which she purportedly insulted the Party's General Secretary. This confrontation led to a misunderstanding, during which Darko allegedly assaulted Asabea.

Following the incident, Asabea filed a complaint with the police and was issued a medical form to seek treatment. Despite Darko's denial of the offense in his cautioned statement, police investigations concluded that he had physically attacked Asabea in front of witnesses, leading to his arrest and subsequent arraignment.
