Accra: Dr Maame Boatemaa Amissah-Arthur, Consultant Rheumatologist at Nuffield Clinic, emphasizes the significance of early diagnosis in managing lupus and urges the public to seek medical attention promptly.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Amissah-Arthur highlighted the complexity of lupus, stressing the importance of early diagnosis and personalized treatment plans during the Lupus Awareness Day event on May 10. She noted that while lupus is a lifelong condition, it can be effectively managed with appropriate support systems.
Health experts have pointed out that lupus symptoms can vary and affect multiple parts of the body. Common symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, fever, skin rashes, such as the 'butterfly rash,' and hair loss. Lupus awareness is promoted globally, with the entire month of May dedicated to Lupus Awareness Month. Nuffield Clinic marked the day with a multidisciplinary educational event themed 'Empowering Health, Inspiring Hope.'
The event brought together patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to raise awareness about lupus and provide practical tools for holistic management. Miss Priscilla Kushigbeor, a clinical psychologist, addressed the mental and psychological challenges of living with a chronic illness, encouraging patients to seek mental health support and build resilience through mindfulness and support networks.
Miss Serwaa Esumaba, a certified nutritionist, shared dietary strategies focused on reducing inflammation and supporting the immune system. She advised attendees on balanced eating habits and educated them on food triggers that could exacerbate lupus symptoms.
Miss Elizabeth Sarpong, a physiotherapist, demonstrated the benefits of safe and consistent physical activity in improving joint function, reducing fatigue, and supporting overall well-being in lupus patients.
The event concluded with an interactive session where patients shared experiences, asked questions, and received advice from the expert panel. Attendees appreciated the initiative, noting it clarified misconceptions, offered hope, and reinforced the value of holistic care.
The event underscores Nuffield Clinic's commitment to providing specialized care rooted in education and empowerment. By observing World Lupus Day, the clinic stands in solidarity with the global lupus community, emphasizing that with knowledge, support, and compassion, life with lupus can be fulfilling and meaningful.
