Constitution Week: NCCE Engages Fire and Custom Officers in Ashanti Region

Ashanti Region: As part of its 2025 Constitution Week celebration, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has extended its outreach to Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Custom Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). The dual engagement was spearheaded by the Ashanti Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Margaret Konama, and her Deputy, Mr. Andrew Ofori Larbi.

According to Ghana News Agency, the sessions aimed to promote civic consciousness and deepen understanding of the 1992 Constitution among security personnel. Each event followed a consistent three-part format: an overview of the NCCE's mandate and the relevance of Constitution Week; a presentation on the 2025 theme, 'Ghana's Future: Our Collective Responsibility'; and an inter-departmental Constitution quiz designed to test and enhance participants' knowledge of the 1992 Constitution.

At the GNFS Regional Headquarters, 49 officers from various departments took part in the programme. They were welcomed by Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFO II) Peter Tetteh, Regional Commander, and his Deputy, ACFO II Amos Abban. The Safety Department emerged winners of the keenly contested quiz, followed by the Control and Administration Departments. Commending the initiative, ACFO II Tetteh encouraged officers to prioritise the future of Ghana in every assignment they undertake. The NCCE presented all quiz participants and senior officers with copies of the 1992 Constitution.

At the Custom Division of GRA, the NCCE team met with 34 Customs officers at a similar event hosted by Sector Commander, Assistant Commissioner (AC) Evans Teye Agbozo. Participants were grouped into 'Old School' and 'New School' teams for the Constitution quiz, with the more experienced officers narrowly claiming victory. AC Agbozo lauded the NCCE's efforts and urged the Commission to conduct such civic education sessions more frequently. 'This exercise should be replicated at least three times a year across all security services,' he said, highlighting the importance of civic literacy in promoting discipline and respect for the rule of law.

During open forums at both events, officers raised critical national issues, including disparities in ex-gratia payments within the public sector and laws to regulate religious activities in the country. There was unanimous support among participants for the proposal to make subsidized copies of the Constitution more accessible to the public.

Madam Konama described the two-day outreach as 'highly successful and impactful.' The NCCE's Ashanti Regional Directorate plans to continue its Constitution Week tour with further engagements at other security and public service institutions throughout the month. The initiative forms part of the Commission's broader effort to foster a constitutionally literate and civically responsible citizenry across all sectors of Ghanaian society.
