Commercial Sex Workers Educated on Mpox Disease in Sekondi

Sekondi: Some commercial sex workers within the Sekondi railway station enclave have been educated on the mode of contraction of Mpox Diseases. The education, according to Mr. Dominic Bentum, the District Officer of the Ghana Red Cross Society, involved five volunteers.

According to Ghana News Agency, the volunteers had to inform the Queen mother to request permission, gain access, and organize members for the education on the disease. Mr. Bentum stated that although many of the workers were on duty at the time of the visit, a significant number participated in the program.

“We visited about 28 ladies including their Queen mothers and customers,” he noted. Many of the ladies, as he mentioned, were Nigerians providing services to men in the metropolis. Some of the sex workers expressed interest in having flyers posted in their rooms for their customers to learn about the disease.

Mr. Bentum highlighted that inadequate posters and a shortage of volunteers hampered effective education and sensitization efforts. He called for more volunteers to join the outreach program to achieve better results.
