Commercial Drivers and Residents Demand Fix for Faulty Streetlights in Sunyani

Sunyani: Commercial drivers and residents in Sunyani have called for the repair of faulty streetlights to enhance security in the regional capital.

According to Ghana News Agency, drivers attribute the poor lighting system, due to many non-functioning streetlights, to the increasing number of crashes and pedestrian knockdowns in the city.

In a conversation with the agency, residents expressed growing concern over the situation, highlighting that drivers often flee after knocking down pedestrians instead of assisting them. The lack of adequate lighting has also been linked to a rise in theft and petty crime, with criminals targeting individuals for mobile phones and personal belongings during nighttime.

Mr. Kwaku Agyeman, a commercial driver, urged city authorities to address the issue promptly, noting the alarming rise in mobile phone snatchings. He explained, "The attackers often threaten their victims with knives and offensive instruments and snatch their mobile phones and other personal properties."

Madam Grace Oduro, a resident and victim of such crimes, recounted her experience of having her mobile phone stolen. She appealed to the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to improve the lighting system and called on the police to increase night patrols to manage the growing crime rate in the city.

Madam Oduro expressed confidence that installing additional streetlights and maintaining existing ones would help create a safer environment for all residents in Sunyani.
