Christianity Emphasizes Impact on Lives Over Rituals, Says Afriyie-Ankrah

Accra: Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, has emphasized that the essence of Christianity extends beyond attending church services or engaging in prayer to making tangible positive impacts on people's lives. He conveyed this message during the 10th Episcopal Anniversary of Most Rev Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD, Bishop of Ho Catholic Diocese.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Afriyie Ankrah insisted that the true measure of faith lies in the positive impact it has on others, rather than mere religious observance. He underscored the importance of applying biblical principles in daily life to make a difference by serving others, showing compassion, and demonstrating love and kindness. He cited the diocesan documentary premiered during the anniversary, which chronicled the diocese's journey, challenges, and triumphs in social intervention, primarily in health and education sectors.

In his speech, Mr Afriyie Ankrah referenced biblical teachings from Genesis to highlight the responsibility of Christians to positively impact the world. He stated, "Christianity is not just about going to church or praying, but it's about having a positive impact on the lives of people. People must eat. People must have water to drink. People must have a roof over their heads." He emphasized that Christians, as the light of the earth, must ensure structures are in place to enable people to live properly.

He also spoke on the role of religious faith in nation-building by shaping moral virtues and ensuring peace. He congratulated Bishop Fianu, who serves as the Chairman of the National Peace Council, for his leadership and contributions. Mr Ankrah referenced President Mahama's 24-Hour Economy initiative, underscoring that such national agendas can flourish only if people of faith nurture peace, justice, and integrity in their communities.

Rev Fr Emmanuel Dotse Komla, Chairman of the Anniversary Central Planning Committee, described the celebration as a journey of grace and growth, reflecting on the diocese's progress under Bishop Fianu's leadership. He commended the bishop for leading with grace and fortitude, building bridges, nurturing souls, and strengthening institutions.

Bishop Fianu expressed gratitude for the past decade's achievements, recognizing the foundations laid by his predecessor. He thanked collaborators for their support and expressed hope for continued collaboration to build a better future for the diocese. Proceeds from the anniversary celebration, themed 'A Decade of Shepherding God's Flock; Looking into the Future as Pilgrims of Hope,' will be used to complete a cathedral project at Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish, Ho-Bankoe, which began in the 2000s to provide a larger space for diocesan liturgical celebrations.

Bishop Fianu was announced as the bishop-elect of Ho by Vatican Radio during his 30th anniversary of priestly ordination in July 2015 and was ordained and installed in October of the same year.
