Chiefs Who Spearhead Illegal Mining to Abdicate Their Throne – Awulae Attibrukusu

Axim: The Paramount Chief of Lower Axim Traditional Area, Awulae Attibrukusu III, has issued a stern warning that any chief under his jurisdiction found to be involved in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, will be required to abdicate their throne immediately upon arrest.

According to Ghana News Agency, Awulae Attibrukusu III expressed deep concern over the extensive damage to lands and water bodies, which are vital resources for the farmers in the region. The warning was delivered during a meeting of the Lower Axim Traditional Council held in Axim, located in the Nzema-East Municipality of the Western Region.

The Paramount Chief emphasized that this announcement serves as a final warning to any chief involved in illegal mining within his area. He identified specific towns where galamsey activities have become prevalent, including Awukyire, Kegina, Anagye, Nduabesa, Agona, and Edelesuazo. Awulae Attibrukusu III has previously reported the chiefs of these communities to the authorities and stated that he will not intervene on their behalf if they are arrested.

He urged the Traditional Council to take decisive action against illegal mining to restore the council's former prestige. Awulae Attibrukusu III questioned how excavators and Chanfangs are transported through these towns to conduct mining activities in the bushes.

Furthermore, the Paramount Chief shared a personal experience of illegal miners invading his rubber plantation, causing significant damage to a farm he developed with his own resources. He called upon chiefs and queen mothers to support the government and the efforts of the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, in the fight against galamsey.
