Mobile Money Agents on High Alert Ahead of December 7th Elections.

Accra: The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MMAAG) has advised its members to be vigilant of the activities of criminals as Ghana gears up for its presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7. The directive, signed by the association's General Secretary, Mr. Evans Otumfuo, underscored the need for heightened vigilance amidst potential security risks during the election period.According to Ghana News Agency, the directive highlighted the strain on the Ghana Police Service, which would be heavily deployed for election-related duties, leaving fewer personnel available to address other security concerns. The MMAAG urged its members to take proactive measures to safeguard their businesses and personal safety.'Mobile money agents are particularly vulnerable during times of heightened activity such as elections. We strongly advise against carrying large sums of cash and we urge agents to remain vigilant, especially in secluded areas,' Mr. Otumfuo stated. The association recommended practical s teps, including enhancing shop security with features such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and alarm systems and avoiding operations in isolated locations.The notice also provided emergency contacts, encouraging agents to promptly report any security incidents to the Ghana Police Service via toll-free numbers. Despite the potential inconvenience to customers, the MMAAG emphasised that the safety of its members remains paramount. 'We apologise for any disruptions on election day as a result of these measures. Our priority is ensuring that agents can operate without fear of robbery or harm,' Mr. Otumfuo noted.The advisory comes against the backdrop of increased reports of armed robberies targeting mobile money operators, raising concerns about the safety of financial transactions in the informal sector. Mobile money services have become a cornerstone of Ghana's financial system, offering convenient and accessible monetary solutions to millions; however, the rise in service adoption has also made operators a target for criminal activities.The MMAAG assured its members of continued support and called for collaboration with security agencies to navigate the challenges posed by the election period, stating that 'Your well-being is our utmost concern, and we are committed to ensuring that you receive the protection and resources needed to stay safe.'
