Bumper Fish Harvests in Keta Municipality Face Market Challenges

Keta: Fisherfolks within coastal communities in Keta Municipality of the Volta Region are enjoying a bumper harvest of fish over the months due to what was described as favorable weather conditions. The communities include Tetekope, Abutiakope, Vodza, Kedzi, among others.

According to Ghana News Agency, the abundant catch has brought relief and joy to the fishing community with varieties of fish species caught such as tilapia and anchovies. Mr. Simon Tettevi, a fisherman, attributed the bumper harvest to the rainy season, which has brought favorable fishing conditions. Despite the abundance of fish, there is no ready market to sell, leading to struggles for many fisherfolks who sell their catches on credit. This situation could result in a substantial loss of income for the fisherfolks and affect the local economy.

He added that the bumper harvest has led to an increase in the supply of fish in local markets, resulting in lower prices, which benefits consumers. However, this could negatively impact the livelihoods of fisherfolks who are struggling to make a living due to the lack of markets. Previously, catches were taken to various nearby towns, but now, other coastal communities are also experiencing bumper harvests, saturating the market.

Madam Mawulorm Woashie, a fishmonger, called on stakeholders and authorities to support the fishing industry by protecting the marine ecosystem and ensuring the long-term viability of the industry. She urged the public to support local fishing by purchasing from them to promote and sustain the industry. She also highlighted the need for urgent prioritization of the fishing industry by stakeholders and the government, suggesting alternatives such as proper storage facilities to prevent spoilage.

Madam Woashie expressed concern about the impact of climate change on fish stocks and the threat of alleged illegal fishing practices. She urged fishing authorities to address these challenges to ensure the sustainability of the fishing business.

The Ghana News Agency gathered that the Keta Municipal Assembly and other authorities have previously promised to support the fisherfolks with improved infrastructure and equipment to boost the fishing industry and address challenges. The fisherfolks pleaded with individuals, hotels, restaurants, and others to buy and support the local economy to sustain fishing practices and promote food security in the communities.
