Berekum Municipal Assembly Warns Against Indiscriminate Plastic Waste Disposal

Berekum: The Berekum East Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has issued a warning to residents regarding the indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste and littering. Mr. Bennedict Quao, the Assistant Berekum Municipal Engineer, emphasized that individuals caught in such acts would face sanctions.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Quao highlighted that with the onset of the rainy season, improper disposal of plastic waste and other materials could obstruct gutters, negatively impacting drainage systems and potentially leading to flooding. This warning followed a significant clean-up effort by the Assembly at the Berekum central market after a recent downpour resulted in flooding.

During the clean-up, participants worked to clear clogged gutters, remove debris, collect plastic waste and containers, and sweep the market area. Mr. Quao expressed the Assembly's empathy towards the traders affected by the flood and pledged to enhance the drainage systems to prevent future incidents. He urged traders to remain vigilant and ensure that refuse is not dumped in a way that blocks water flow and clogs gutters.

Mr. Joseph Baffour, the Assembly Member of the Kyiritwedie Electoral Area, who led the clean-up initiative, noted the importance of environmental cleanliness and hygiene in preventing communicable disease outbreaks, encouraging the traders to maintain a clean market. Trader Mr. Evans Baah expressed gratitude to the Assembly for organizing the clean-up and requested additional dustbins and waste containers to facilitate waste collection at the central market.
