ATU Receives 2025 EBSCO Solar Grant

Accra: Accra Technical University (ATU) together with some other institutions have received the 2025 EBSCO Solar Grant. ATU becomes the first winner of the grant from the Sub-Saharan Africa. The other institutions are Brooklyn Public Library, Patten Free Library, and Wolfe County Public Library, all from the United States of America.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement issued in Accra said the program, in its 10th year, continues to support libraries in adopting solar energy and creating more sustainable spaces for their communities. The four grantees will share a total amount of $300,000 to help offset the costs of solar panel installation, advancing their commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship within their communities.

The statement noted that ATU installing solar panels would not only help them reduce energy costs but also enable them to support the surrounding community during power grid disruptions. It said with Brooklyn Public Library spearheading renewable energy projects across its over 60 locations, the EBSCO Solar Grant would aid the library in offsetting their energy footprint and establishing themselves as an influencer in sustainability efforts across New York City.

The Patten Free Library, which welcomes more than 100,000 visitors annually, is committed to sustainability. They plan to reduce their carbon footprint by automating their building system and installing solar panels, allowing them to reinvest their energy savings into services and maintenance, the statement added.

The statement also highlighted that currently, Wolfe County Public Library's goals include improving accessibility, enhancing outdoor spaces, and increasing energy efficiency. It added that receiving the EBSCO Solar Grant would help them achieve these goals.
