Assembly Member Calls for Urgent Expansion of Adjei-Kojo Drainage Systems to Mitigate Flooding

Adjei-Kojo: Ms Charity Dela Siameh, the Assembly Member for Adjei-Kojo in the Tema West Municipality, has called for the urgent expansion and improvement of drainage systems in the area to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season. Ms Siameh emphasized that the current drainage infrastructure was inadequate, leading to frequent flooding that adversely affects residents, particularly those residing in low-lying areas.

According to Ghana News Agency, Ms Siameh stressed the necessity of swift action to expand the drains and remove obstructions to prevent property damage for residents in flood-prone parts of Adjei-Kojo during heavy rains. She highlighted specific issues in Kanewu, where a wall constructed by a company has decreased the drainage size, obstructing the free flow of rainwater and directing it into homes. Additionally, she mentioned that the slopes in certain areas of Solomon City pose risks to residents at lower elevations, causing water accumulation in their homes during rainfall.

The Assembly Member pointed out that, although not all communities in the electoral area are affected by flooding, enhancing the drainage systems would safeguard both lives and property while bolstering economic activities in the region. Despite some minor drainage improvements in the past, these efforts have been insufficient in addressing the increasing volume of rainwater resulting from changing weather patterns and urban development.

Ms Siameh also mentioned that the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) plans to visit the affected victims to express solidarity, assess the damage, and strategize possible ways to support victims in recovering from their losses.
