Awutu-Senya-East: The Awutu-Senya-East Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and a security taskforce, has embarked on a decongestion exercise at the Central Business District (CBD). The initiative is aimed at ensuring the free flow of both human and vehicular traffic, thereby preventing unforeseen accidents on the road shoulders.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise involved the demolition of makeshift stalls and unauthorized sheds situated on pavements and along the roads. The decision sparked reactions from some affected individuals who protested the move by gathering at the premises of the area's Member of Parliament, Mrs. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Seth Sabah Serwornoo-Banini expressed surprise at the traders' reaction, noting that several meetings had been conducted with leaders of the traders, the traders themselves, security officials, and other stakeholders before the exercise to reach a mutual agreement. As part of these discussions, an agreement was reached to relocate the affected traders to a satellite market at Iron City, a suburb in the Municipality.
Mr. Serwornoo-Banini assured that dialogue would continue to ensure the sustainability of the exercise but emphasized that the law would be enforced against offenders. Furthermore, the Assembly's NADMO Director, Mr. Nash Nyande, cautioned that the exercise would not be a temporary measure, with plans to maintain operations 24 hours a day to prevent the traders from re-occupying the vacated spaces.
Mr. Nyande urged the traders to comply with the directives to avoid vehicular accidents and ensure their own safety. The authorities stressed the importance of adhering to the new arrangements to facilitate a safer and more organized business environment in the Central Business District.
